Jibran Nasir files FIR against Amir Liaquat over hate speech

Lawyer and Human Rights Activist Jibran Nasir on Thursday filed an FIR against TV anchor Amir Liaquat Hussain and BOL TV network under anti-terrorism act (ATA) for intimidating the public and spreading religious hatred.

Nasir in his FIR stated that the said anchor and channel was spreading religious hate mongering and threatening the lives of certain journalists and activists.

Nasir stated that Amir on his show, has without any evidence accused him of being an atheist, a traitor who is an Indian Agent and is working against Pakistan and Pakistan Army, a blasphemer who insults and runs propaganda against Allah, the Holy Quran and the Holy Prophet (S.A.W).

“Those similar allegations have been levelled against Salman Haider, Ahmed Wacias Goraya, Asim Saeed and Ahmed Raza Naseer, those citizens who have been recently abducted from Islamabad and various cities of Punjab,” he added

He alleged that Amir Liaquat also aired on his show faces of Pakistani citizens who participated in the protests for recovery of abducted citizens and declared them a traitor and Anti-State.

He said the allegations by Amir Liaquat and management of BOL News has resulted in various death threats being issued to him through social media and cleric Khadim Hussain Rizvi has also started propagating this propaganda in his sermons declaring the missing persons as blasphemer and him as their facilitator.

Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority on Thursday also banned Amir Liaquat and his programme over hate speech, according to a notification.

“Amir Liaquat and his programme has been banned with immediate effect for preaching hate,” a notification issued by the Pemra read.

The Pemra statement made it clear that if Amir Liaquat “continues to abuse freedom of speech and violates PEMRA Code of Conduct 2015, PEMRA Ordinance 2002, Rules and Regulations on any other TV channel(s), the Authority shall invoke Section 27 of PEMRA Ordinance 2002 against that TV channel.”
