In an abject case of male chauvinism and shocking sexism, Dr Saleem Bhatti, a lecturer of mathematics at a girls college in Lahore mansplained integral calculus to his students.
“Limits defined, the integral of an equation represents the area under the curve represented by that equation,” said the shameful chauvinist. “The process – roughly but not exactly – is the opposite of the differentiation that we learnt in the previous semester.”
“Who the hell does he think he is,” said Sumera Saeed, liberal arts major, who is taking the course to cover the minimum math and science requirement that her institute demands. “Just explaining these things to us as if we were just some objects.”
“It’s always the male approach to mathematics. There is no one to represent the women’s point of view,” she continued.
Dr Bhatti’s problems in the area started with other senior students, when he manterrupted a female student in his class of Classical Mechanics and told her that though her method and calculation were correct, broadly speaking, she forgot to add the constant of integration, which threw her final answer off when calculating the torque of the helicopter rotor in the question.
“I was shocked, but I’ve been taught by my women’s studies professor not to take such condescension lying down,” said Faiza Hassan, the victim of such sexism. “I stood my ground and straight-up asked him whether he would have said the same to a male student.”
“The shameless pervert was actually surprised and said ‘Of course I would’,” she added.
According to the students, the situation had not improved when Dr Bhatti had gone on leave and was substituted by a female professor. “She had just internalised all this male approach to the subject. It was all Fourier Series this, and Hypergeometric Distribution that,” said Saira Hameed, another liberal arts student. “It was always calculate this or plot this on a graph, nothing about feelings.”
“She actually failed all of us! I hate it when women put other women down!
