Sindh police finally seems to be pulling its socks up. Its most recent achievement is the largest ever recovery of lethal weapons stored in an empty house in Karachi with an intent to spread mayhem in the megalopolis. The type of the weapons found and their number indicates that these were meant to be used in an extraordinary terrorist activity. If employed in a terrorist act during the Ashura, it would have led to an unprecedented communal massacre. There seems however to be a greater chance of the weapons being employed against the armed forces and the police as the inventory includes 148 bullet proof jackets and as many as 11 anti –aircraft guns beside numerous grenade launchers, LMGs, RPGs and SMGs.

The discoveries were made as a result of the interrogation of a detained suspect. The location of the secret arsenal as well as the identity of the suspect indicates the weapons were stored by the militant wing of the MQM presently under control of the London based faction led by Altaf Hussain. The city police chief claimed that these arms were supposed to be used at the behest of the elements residing in London who are hand in glove with the RAW for terrorist activities in Karachi. According to another senior police officer these were to be used by the terrorist wing of the party which operates from South Africa. While the conclusions drawn largely on the basis of circumstantial evidence might be right, what is needed is a rigorous investigation by agencies to find solid proofs to take the criminals to justice with the help of the Interpol.

The recovery of the weapons proves that a depoliticized police is the best force to investigate crime. Recruited from among local population it has its ear to the ground. What is more comprising officers who spend a lifetime in the city and the province they have a long experience of dealing with the criminals of the sort than those who happen to be on a short deputation or do not belong to the area.
