Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Anwar Zaheer Jamali took notice of the killing of Barrister Fahad Sohrab Malik that took place on August 15. The notice was taken on a note of Supreme Court (SC) registrar that contained the details of the incident and asked the Islamabad IGP to submit a report within one week.

The note said that the incident could have been averted if the vehicles had been checked and searched properly by the Islamabad police before the incident took place. It also pointed to the failure of police to anticipate the breach of peace and take proper precautionary measures when it saw that the two parties were antagonistic towards each other.

“On account of the lethargic attitude of the police department, one of the accused has initially succeeded in obtaining interim bail from the Court of District and Session Judge, Islamabad which has now been cancelled and the accused has been handed over to Police on Physical remand,” it read.

The press release issued by the SC PRO said that the lack of proper security arrangements by the administration constitutes violation of fundamental right to the life and liberty which has been guaranteed under Article 9 of the Constitution of Pakistan.

The slain barrister hailed from an influential political family and was nephew of Mian Muhammad Sumroo, ex-chairman Senate. The news of his killing jolted the city at once. The circumstances preceding his killing are still surrounded by much hearsay and rumor as it involves two influential groups of capital who fought it out in the streets of Sector F-10, Islamabad.
