A decision has been taken to increase the seats of deputy mayors for Municipal Corporation Rawalpindi (MCR) from one to five.
There were two seats for deputy mayors in MCR which were reduced to one while the other seat was given to Murree Corporation. The mayor and deputy mayor elections will not, however, be held till December in Murree.
According to the new notification, those who are elected against reserved seats of labour will not be entitled to contest election of mayor and deputy mayor. Only those candidates who are elected on technocrat seat will be eligible to contest polls for the seats of mayor, deputy mayor, vice chairman and district council chairman.
According to election commission sources, that election on only one seat of deputy mayor will take place besides the election of mayor of MCR in October.
Later, the representatives of MCR in their meeting will pass the resolution for increasing the seats of deputy mayor from one to five and will send it to Punjab government for approval. The seats will be increased through a notification.
According to media reports, the matter for enhancing the seats of deputy mayor from one to five has been settled between government, elected representatives and the local Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz.
