City hospitals witness low attendance

Low attendance of medical staff was observed in Sindh government- and Karachi Metropolitan Corporation-run hospitals in Karachi following heavy rains in different areas of the city which started on Friday evening and continued on Saturday.

The attendance of doctors, paramedical staff, nurses and other administrative staff remained low in most of the city hospitals including Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center (JPMC), National Institute of Child Health (NICH), National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD), Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH), Sindh Government New Karachi Hospital, Sindh Government Lyari General Hospital and other hospitals following the rain.

Sources at Sindh Government Hospital New Karachi told PPI that a number of doctors, paramedical staff, nurses and other administrative staff were  absent from their duties when Health Minister Dr Sikandar Mandhro paid a surprise visit to a hospital to review rain emergency arrangements.

Similarly, most of medical staff in Sindh Government Lyari General Hospital also remained absent from their duties.

The medical staff even failed to follow the instructions issued y the director health services and senior director health and medical services, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, in connection rain emergency in government hospitals of the city.

Director Health Services, Karachi, Dr Shakoor Abbasi, when contacted, told PPI that strict action would be taken against medical staff which remained absent from their duties during rain emergency situation in the city. He said the health minister and district health officers were also paying surprise visits to different healthcares to check the attendance of medical staff.
