Seventy thousand terrorists have been arrested since the launch of the National Action Plan (NAP), National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA) Coordinator Ihsan Ghani stated during a press briefing in Islamabad on Monday.

Giving details about the operations launched under the NAP, the NACTA coordinator said 8,852 armed militants and operatives of banned outfits have been arrested from different parts of the country while 11 others were killed in retaliation.

According to Ghani, about fourteen hundred thousand people have been arrested through the dedicated telephone line extension 1717 set up for terror-related complaints.

He said 126 accounts belonging to banned organisations with accumulated deposits of over Rs one billion have been frozen.

About the Karachi operation, the NACTA coordinator said 70 per cent reduction is witnessed in targeted killings and murders, and 80 percent reduction in terrorist incidents in the port city. He said efforts are being made to ensure that extremist elements do not get a foothold in Punjab.

In Balochistan, Ghani added, 625 fararis have surrendered to the authorities and the government is in contact with estranged Baloch nationalists. He said that December 31 has been set as the deadline for the return of registered Afghan refugees.

Similarly, a total of 2,159 terrorists have been killed and 1,724 arrested by law enforcement agencies under the National Action Plan (NAP), added the NACTA coordinator.

On Friday the Interior Ministry and Narcotics Control presented an achievement report about the NAP in the National Assembly, as per which 332 persons have been executed under the anti-terrorism act so far.

The report stated that 98.3 million SIMs have been blocked for dismantling communication networks of terrorists. At least 933 URLs and 10 websites of militant organisations have also been blocked by the Ministry of Information Technology.

The report also detailed that 2,337 cases were registered over hate speeches and hate material while 2,195 people were arrested and 73 shops sealed.
