The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Wednesday summoned Mukhtiarkar of district Thatta on a contempt application filed against him for not complying the court’s direction for removal of encroachments from the premises of historical Makli graveyard.
The SHC bench headed by Justice Syed Hasan Azhar Rizvi was hearing the contempt application filed against deputy commissioner and Mukhtiarkar of Thatta as they had failed to remove illegal occupations made in the historic graveyard of Makli.
Earlier in August 2015, the SHC directed Mukhtiarkar Thatta to remove encroachment from the graveyard within 15 days and submit a report in this regard but no record had been filed yet. The court summoned Mukhtirkar along with compliance report on March 30, 2016.
The petitioner Ali Muhammad Shah, who is also Guddi-Nasheen of Syed Jaan Muhammad Shah, submitted that the national heritage had been encroached but no action had been taken against the land grabbers. He alleged that official respondents were protecting the encroachers. The Makli graveyard has its historical importance as it is a precious national heritage preserved under the Sindh Culture Heritage (Preservation) Act, 1994.
