The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Tuesday restrained transfer of Dr Khalid Mehmood Soomro murder case to a military court till January 27.

The Sukkur bench of the high court heard a petition of the defence in which it was argued that the case was already being heard by an anti-terrorism court. The petitioner had sought a court order for restraining transfer of the case to a military court.

The bench issued a restraining order till January 27 and also required the reply of the attorney general over the matter. The Jamiat Ulema Islam-Fazl (JUI F) had staged sit-ins in different cities of Sindh in December seeking transfer of the murder case of the party’s provincial secretary Dr Khalid Mehmood Soomro to a military court.

Workers of the JUI-F had also staged a sit-in in Larkana by blocking the roads leading to Garhi Khuda Bakhsh. The protest forced Sindh Assembly Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani and other PPP leaders to return while they were traveling to Garhi Khuda Bakhsh for attending a ceremony regarding death anniversary of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto.

The Larkana commissioner and DIG held talks with sons of slain JUI-F leader and assured them that the case would be forwarded to the special court within 10 days. The JUI F ended its province-wide protest after the assurance by Sindh government in black and white to send the murder case of Dr Soomro to military court. Dr Khalid Mehmood Soomro was shot dead in Sukkur on November 29, 2014, as he was leaving a mosque after offering Fajr prayers.
