The teachers of the Punjab University held a protest demonstration in New Campus against notices to vacate the houses for Metro Train Project and warned to besiege the Chief Minister’s House and stage a sit-in on The Mall and Canal Road if notices to demolish teacher’s houses are not withdrawn immediately.

The protesting teachers were carrying banners inscribed with slogans in favour of their demands. They chanted slogans against the provincial government and other authorities concerned for depriving the educators of shelter in the name of development.

Earlier, an emergency meeting of Academic Staff Association (ASA) attended by hundreds of teachers of PU was held Al-Raazi Hall on Monday. ASA President Dr Hassan Mobeen Alam, Secretary Dr Mahboob Hussain and Vice President Dr Abid Hussain Chaudhry presided over the meeting.

During the meeting, the PU teachers expressed their resolve to opt to any extreme to save their houses constructed with their hard-earned savings in PU Housing Society on Raiwind Road after paying consecutive installments during last 13 years.

They urged the Chief minister and Lahore Development Authority (LDA) Vice Chairman Khawaja Ahmad Hassan to fulfill their promises made to PU teachers. They alleged that in order to save the land of Punjab Minister Mujtaba Shuja ur Rehman and other politicians, PU teachers are being threatened to vacate the land for metro train offices which can be constructed elsewhere on nearby available vacant lands. The meeting also decided that a body of senior teachers would take up the matter with the government officers concerned, otherwise protest move will be launched after the scheduled ASA meeting on Tuesday.
