A four-storey building was evacuated as cracks started appearing on its walls on Friday.
Some residents of the building located in Gulshan-e-Iqbal block IV left their homes as the structure started sinking on one side.
Karachi Commissioner Shoaib Siddiqui said residential buildings surrounding the dilapidated structure have also been evacuated to avert any untoward situation. He said action would be taken against those responsible for construction of the building. Locals say construction of the building in Central Government Housing Society was completed only last year on a 96 square yard plot.
They said work on construction of a paint house was still underway in the building before the evacuation.
Ejaz Hashmani, owner of the building, says he had paid Rs 12.8 million to a builder six months ago to purchase the structure.
This is only a sample building in Karachi. When there was earth-quake in Islamabad, an eminent writer of DAWN Karachi wrote " If an earth-quake like that comes in Karachi, 10 times more people will perish than in Islamabad". There could be hundreds more buildings in Karachi like that. Want to see what 'action' the authorities take.
