At least 16 people were killed and over 100 injured when four bogies of a Rawalpindi-bound train derailed near Aab-e-Gum area of Bolan district Tuesday.
According to Balochistan Home Secretary Akbar Hussain Durrani, four carriages of the Jaffar Express derailed after it left Quetta Railway Station. He said the train’s brakes failure led to the accident.
Personnel of the Frontier Corps and army along with ambulances immediately reached the site of the accident and started rescue and relief activities.
According to an update released by ISPR, 47 injured passengers were shifted to Combined Medical Hospital (CMH) Quetta using Pakistan Army’s Mi-17 helicopters. Another 14 injured passengers were also shifted to CMH Quetta by army ambulances. Also FC troops shifted 63 injured passengers to Mach hospital. An emergency was declared in all hospitals of Quetta.
Balochistan Home Secretary Durrani said among the dead so far confirmed were 12 passengers.
Earlier on November 1, four people were killed and another eight injured when a train hit a home-made bomb planted on the rail track in Mastung district of Balochistan. Railways Divisional Superintendent Faiz Muhammad Bugti had said the victims were all railway employees. They were Quetta residents who were travelling to Punjab for holidays.
Prior to this, on June 6, the train was on its way to Quetta when an explosion derailed four of its carriages leaving eight people injured. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
