Railways suspends 8 officials over Gujranwala train crash

Pakistan Railways has suspended eight employees, including the Controller Railways over the train accident that took place in Gujranwala on July 2.

The decision was implemented by the department’s chief executive officer in light of an enquiry carried out jointly by Pakistan Army and Pakistan Railways.

According to the notification issued by Railway Headquarters Lahore following have been suspended for their direct involvement in the incident: Muhammad Fayaz, Grade-9, driver, Shahid Mehmood Bhatti, Grade-5,  assistant driver.

Personnel indirectly responsible for the incident and suspended are Zahid Saeed, Grade 16, in-charge of Control Center Railways, Lahore, Ahsan ul Haq, Grade-16, Section Superintendent, Allah Rakha, Grade 15, Deputy Chief Controller, Awais Akhtar, Grade 12, Section Controller, Muhammad Hanif, Mechanical Foreman Faisalabad.

According to regulations of railways, the suspended persons will be presented with the charge sheet after which they will present their defence. Railways will decide next course of action after their replies.

Some 19 personnel of Pakistan Army including the commander of an Engineering Battalion Lieutenant Colonel Amir Jadoon embraced martyrdom during the fatal train crash.
