A two-member Supreme Court bench, comprising Justice Jawwad S Khawaja and Justice Dost Muhammad, on Wednesday directed the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to submit details of the people who surrendered themselves for voluntarily returning money amounting to Rs 265 billion through plea bargain during the last 15 years.

During the hearing of case on NAB’s performance, Director General Operation Khalid Mahmood informed the court that NAB had recovered Rs 265 billion so far and it has maintained last four years’ record.

NAB’s prosecutor Akbar Tarar informed the court that the bureau had submitted the amended list of 150 mega corruption scams on last hearing.

Asking about the report on the matter, Justice Khawaja remarked that if SC has to dictate NAB’s operation then it must be shut down. He said that the cases in NAB have been pending for the past 15 years.

The NAB prosecutor replied that cases have been pending due to different reasons. New NAB chief took charge in December 2013 and the accountability bureau opened old cases in March 2014, while several officers who were in NAB during 2003 have died, he added.

The bench said that NAB reopened Muslim Commercial Bank (MCB) privatisation case and summoned head of the Bank Mian Mansha, who sought time to examine record.

The court adjourned the hearing after seeking recovery details of Rs 265 billion till Thursday.
