In its meeting held under the chairmanship of National Assembly Opposition Leader Syed Khurshid Shah on Wednesday, the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) directed Pakistan Railways secretary to initiate a high-level investigation into corruption worth millions in Pakistan Railways and submit report in a week.

The meeting also directed the secretary to probe the case of PAC’s “missing letter” and the delay in Railways receiving its order.

PAC had issued a letter to Railways secretary on April 24, which contained “top level information” but the ministry’s “corrupt staff deliberately did not deliver” the letter to the secretary, the meeting noted with concern.

However, the PAC chairman lauded the Defence Ministry for settling a substantial number of audit objections through DACs. The committee also appreciated the recovery of more than Rs 1.5 billion in 16 months, since formation of current PAC.

Defence Secretary Lt Gen (r) Alam Khattak told PAC that 75 DACs have been conducted in past 16 months at regular intervals and comprehensive efforts were being made to resolve all audit-related pending cases.
