*Another infant die at Sargodha hospital, toll reaches 18
*CM orders arrests of officials responsible for negligence
Another infant on Saturday breathed his last due to lack of incubators in District Headquarters Hospital (DHQ) Sargodha, mounting the death toll to 18.
According to doctors, 18 newborns have died in four days due to lack of necessary facilities in the teaching hospital of the district whereas relatives of the infants alleged hospital administration for negligence and claimed that insufficient number of incubators in the hospital led to the deaths.
DHQ hospital had five incubators and admitted children were 60 but on the orders of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, 20 more incubators along with additional machinery are likely to be arranged.
On the other hand, District Teaching Hospital of Sargodha has nursery for children but there is no women ward.
Moreover, 151 newborns have died in the past year due to these issues in the district.
While presiding over a meeting on Saturday which reviewed in detail various steps taken with regard to further improving public health facilities in the province, the Punjab chief minister has ordered the registration of cases against the persons responsible for incidents of deaths of innocent infants in hospitals of Vehari and Sargodha.
He said those responsible had displayed criminal negligence and deserve no leniency. He said such elements should be awarded deterrent punishment so that no one could dare to commit such criminal negligence in future.
The chief minister also ordered immediate action against supply of syrup and substandard injections and registration of cases against the owners of factories concerned, their arrest and strict legal action.
Reports of inquiry committees regarding the incidents of Vehari and Sargodha were presented in the meeting which were reviewed in detail.
The chief minister said life of every child was dearer and provision of the best health facilities was our collective responsibility, adding that no hindrance in provision of quality health facilities will be tolerated.
IMPROVE FACILITIED THROUGH OUT THE PROVINCE:
He directed the authorities concerned to immediately remove shortage of medicines in emergency wards of the hospitals throughout the province and every necessary step should be taken for improving public health facilities in the hospitals.
The chief minister also ordered immediate action against those people involved in supply of substandard injections and syrups in the hospital of Hafizabad, adding that jail was the only place for those involved in the heinous business of fake medicines.
He said special attention should be paid to the mother and child healthcare besides improving management system in hospitals.
TRAINING FOR DOCTORS:
The chief minister directed that a programme should be chalked out regarding training to doctors, nurses and paramedical staff according to modern demands and special attention should be paid to the capacity-building of the staff.
The chief minister said he would himself monitor the steps to be taken for improving public health facilities and directed the advisor health, chief secretary, secretary health and other officials to visit hospitals regularly.
