Minister for Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage Senator Pervaiz Rashid said Tuesday that the recent good news on the economic front was the fruit of democracy in the country, adding that those who tried to derail the system had failed in their efforts and the democratic system had absorbed the shock.

“Neither democracy nor the economy collapsed after the sit-ins,” he said, addressing a joint press conference with Board of Investment Chairman Miftah Ismail and Prime Minister’s Special Assistant Musaddaq Malik.

Time has proved that whenever Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) came to power the national economy was put on the right track, adding that the same has happened during PML-N’s present tenure too.

The minister said that all international organisations monitoring the economy were giving positive reports and ratings and economic magazines were publishing positive stories before August 14 but after that the environment did not remain conducive.

“Hurdles were created in the development process and the visits of Chinese President Xi Jinping and the Qatari premier had to be postponed which affected the economic process, with the energy crisis bearing the main brunt,” he said.

However, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has expressed the resolve to overcome the hurdles with more hard work and ensure the completion of ongoing projects in the stipulated time, Rashid said.
