*Says protesting parties are creating hurdles in country’s development

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has stated in unequivocal terms that he will not resign on the demand of “merely a few thousand people”.

Inaugurating a well of Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) at Soghri, Attock Wednesday, the PM said that he has been elected by 180 million people and the whole parliament and all political parties are united for the continuation of the present system.

He said despite “negative politics” of certain elements, the government will continue to work for the country’s welfare and development.

Rejecting allegations of rigging in 2013 General Elections, Sharif said that the elections were not conducted by the Pakistan Mulsim League-Nawaz (PML-N) but by a neutral set up constituted after consensus amongst all political parties.

He said that in 2008 elections, his and Shahbaz Sharif’s nomination papers were rejected but still his party contested the polls and accepted the electoral results. “Despite reservations on the election results, we did not raise any hue and cry nor opened any front against the winning party–Pakistan People’s Party (PPP),” said Sharif.

“But today a long march has been started against the government which has just completed one year in office,” he added.

‘SHOW SOME PATIENCE PROTESTERS’:

The PM said that the protesting parties are creating hurdles in the country’s development.

“The Chinese president had to visit Pakistan to sign a number of agreements especially on electricity generation but the visit was postponed due to the activities of a few thousand people,” he said.

Sharif said that though it would not have been difficult for the government to clear the roads of protesters, the government has borne the current political turmoil with patience and tolerance and called upon the protesting parties to demonstrate the same spirit and not hamper the county’s development.

‘ENERGY WOES WILL END IN FEW YEARS’:

Speaking on the energy crisis, Sharif said that the government’s first priority is to eliminate power load shedding.

“We have chalked out projects to end load shedding in the next three to four years,” he said. The country’s ailing economy is caused by power cuts, said the PM, pointing out that elimination of load shedding is necessary to promote industrial growth and alleviate poverty and unemployment.

DIG UP THOSE FUEL RESERVES:

Sharif said that the discovery of oil and gas well in Soghri would help save millions of dollars in foreign exchange besides mitigating the energy crisis.

He directed that the exploration of oil and gas reserves in Attock be expedited to meet the growing energy requirements while adding that gas will also be imported to overcome gas shortages.

Announcing a bonus equivalent to two-month salary for the employees of OGDCL, the PM said it was their right and hoped that the organisation would increase its profit by hundred per cent. He lauded OGDCL for generating the profit and expressed hope that other state enterprises would follow suit.

Earlier, Minister for Petroleum Khaqan Abbasi said that 220 barrels of oil and 17 million cubic feet gas on daily basis could be extracted from Soghri-1 well which would increase OGDCL’s income by Rs 5 billion annually.
