It will be difficult to conduct Local Body (LB) elections by November 15 because of the federal and provincial government’s failure to complete legal proceedings for delimitation of constituencies, a private news channel reported Monday.
In March, Supreme Court ordered all provinces to conduct LB elections by November 15 and set a deadline to complete the required legislation by the first week of August.
The case was heard by a three-member bench presided by then chief justice Justice (r) Tasadduq Hussain Jilani. Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had filed a petition against a high court decision that gave authority of delimitation of constituencies to the Government of Punjab.
In the order, the SC had stated that the responsibility of holding fair and free elections was with the ECP and therefore, ECP had the authority for delimitation of constituencies. The court, in return ordered the federal and provincial governments to complete legal proceedings in the next five months.
