ISLAMABAD – Against the backdrop of Raymond Davis’ release, scores of people belonging to various political and religious parties took to the streets on Wednesday against the government. A large number of protesters gathered at various areas of the capital including Abpara Market, National Press Club, Kashmir Highway and the Peshawar Morr area.
In front of the NPC, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) jointly staged a protest and slammed the government for releasing United States (US) spy Raymond Davis who shot dead two Pakistani citizens in Lahore. The students of International Islamic University (IIU) burnt tires and blocked Kashmir Avenue. They were chanting slogans against apathy of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and Pakistan People’s Party led government.
Addressing the protesters, JI leader Mian Aslam said that rulers had succumbed to US pressure because they wanted prolongation of their rule. According to him the victims’ families were forced to enter into a deal with the US embassy.
