Another young woman, who had married a man she loved, was allegedly set ablaze by her in-laws on Sunday night.
Orangi Town’s Nadia, who was brought to hospital with third degree burns, was said to have tried self-immolation because her ever-taunting in-laws had made it impossible for her to lead a happy married life.
According to police, Nadia confessed to attempting self-immolation in her recorded statement. Doctors say she has suffered burns to more than 80 percent of her body, which in most cases are life threatening.
Her husband, Noman, told that they had had a heated domestic argument following which she rushed to the kitchen, doused herself with kerosene oil, struck a match and set herself on fire.
Though Noman’s account conforms to what Nadia told the police, her father had taken a strong exception to it.
“I doubt this ‘attempted suicide theory’ as no one came to save Nadia while she was crying at the top of her lungs in a house full of her in-laws. I want the police to investigate this case on the lines of attempted murder,” said Nadia’s father.
The couple was married just two years ago after a long love affair. The police have filed a case and further investigation is underway.
