Residents of Airport Housing Society face severe water shortage

Dozens of Airport Housing Socitey residents have been struggling with a water shortage so severe that people feel they are living in a desert due to the aggravated water crisis.
“Water shortage developed in early December last year, and some suspect the problem is tied to increasing population in the society, while the resources of water remains the same”, residents said on Monday.
Mrs Sattar, a resident of the society, said the authorities have failed to meet the increasing demand of water, forcing the residents to look to alternative solutions, such as water boring, to meet their needs. But that solution too seems like it will not last for long.
Another resident Shama said, “We are facing severe water shortage as underground water levels go deeper and the costs of hiring water tankers go higher.”
Representative of the society quote financial difficulties being faced by them as the main reason behind the non-initiation of any water supply project.
People were concerned that they are facing water shortage in winter and feared that in summer, the residents have to face scarcity of water, adding the authorities have failed to initiate any project to chalk out a solution.
Now the residents are banking on water tankers, who are fleecing the people by charging double rates, Inam Ahmad who is living in the society for past 5 years told.
“Last year a tanker cost Rs500 to Rs700. This season, the price has shot up to Rs800 to Rs1,000,” he added.
The water tanker business is operated by people who have dug big tube-wells in their private lands. They sell water to the tankers, who then pass it on the consumers in the rural areas. But even with increased rates, the demand often exceeds supply.
Residents of the society have asked the concerned authorities to take notice of the issue and take immediate action to give relief to people.
