The Supreme Court on Monday directed the regional transport authorities to issue fitness certificates to the transporters on merit.

In its ruling, the court ordered to pay compensation to the heirs of the victims.
It also directed authorities to immediately ban public transport without fitness certificate, adding that the regional transport authority should allot vehicle fitness certificates on merit.
The owners of private transport should dispose of substandard gas cylinders. Meanwhile, the court also ordered to ban illegal buying of petrol and LPG.
At least 14 schoolchildren aged between five and 15 died when a van caught fire in Gujrat in May 2013. A teacher also died while saving her students. The court took a suo motu action following the incident.
