The country may face a famine in the next 10 to 15 years if appropriate measures are not taken, Minister for Water and Power Khawaja Asif warned on Friday.

Talking to reporters, Asif said water would be a very important issue in future and there was a need to adopt a joint strategy on it.

“Pakistan can be a victim of water shortage in the next 10 to 15 years.”

He urged the media to highlight Pakistan’s stand on water in a positive manner.

Asif said water was a matter of life and death for Pakistan and implementation of the Indus Water Treaty with India would be ensured.

The minister said there were reservations on the Indus Water Treaty in Pakistan, adding that the water distribution was not just and was tilted in India’s favour.

He said India was encroaching upon water which the Indus Water Treaty gave to Pakistan. “However‚ the government will defend its water rights.”

To a question‚ the minister said the electricity situation was improving in the country.

Earlier‚ he was given a briefing on the water situation in the country.
