The Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan was once again cautioned about President Asif Ali Zardari possible departure from Pakistan after the expiry of his term in September.

According to an application filed in the SC, the reason for the president’s exit from Pakistan could be found in the National Reconciliation Order (NRO) case.

Yesterday, the president was accused of concealing information from the armed forces about the Criminal Investigation Agency’s (CIA’s) operation in Abbottabad but the court’s office returned the application with objections.

Applicant Shahid Orakzai informed the court that the information had a direct bearing on the security of Pakistan, adding that it seemed as if the office did not want the information to be known to the SC.

“According to the constitution, information related to national security cannot be brushed aside or concealed from the security forces,” the applicant said.

The SC was also informed that a few petitioners in the Memo case, including Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, were now members of the federal cabinet and could not be petitioners against the federal government.

Orakzai said his petition for conducting an enquiry into the conduct of former ambassador Hussain Haqqani in the Aiwan-e-Saddar had nothing in common with the petitions filed by Sharif and his party members. He requested the SC to constitute a separate bench for hearing his petition which had been attached to Sharif’s petition in the Memo case by the registrar in 2011.
