The resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Fakhruddin G Ibrahim was accepted on Thursday.

According to media reports, the resignation was accepted on August 12. Ibrahim stepped down from the post after harsh criticism from the opposition parties for what they called his failure to stop rigging in May 11 general elections.

The report said the government would write a letter to the chief justice for appointment of an acting chief election commissioner.
