- Punjab CM says PPP has made serious mistake by boycotting presidential polls
The PML-N had not objected to “the Dogar court’s” decision of allowing Asif Ali Zardari to contest elections even though he did not hold a bachelors degree, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said on Tuesday.
Talking to reporters outside the Punjab Assembly, Shahbaz said, “Why had President Zardari and his party forgotten the decisions of the Dogar court? The court had declared me and Nawaz Sharif ineligible to contest elections at the bidding of President Zardari, therefore it imposed a 20-year ban on us. Abdul Hameed Dogar had not taken oath on the constitution but had taken [Pervez] Musharraf’s oath. The Dogar court had sided with the former president on the eve of proclamation of emergency.”
The Punjab chief minister said holding a BA degree was a condition for contesting polls but Zardari did not have it then and neither does he hold one now, adding that Justice Dogar had still issued an order allowing Zardari to contest polls.
“We did not protest against the order nor did we boycott the elections. Rather fought a legal war,” he held.
Shahbaz said the PPP had made a “serious mistake” by boycotting the presidential polls.
He said parties, including the PML-N had requested the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to change the date of the presidential polls as a large number of “faithful leave for Saudi Arabia for performing umra and leave to perform aitkaf on Ramadan 27”, adding that “the ECP told us that as it had already issued the schedule for the polls, it could not do anything about it and that we should resort to a court of low now”.
“Upon this, the PML-N approached the Supreme Court which gave this decision,” Shahbaz said, adding that the PPP took ill of it and boycotted the polls.
Mr. Show-baz Sharif, say some thing about your delegation's visit to nine zero also. If you had that much majority as the results show what was the big reason to get a slap from London Don when he addressed your delegation then and there by saying that MQM does not go to any one, only the parties who need MQM's help come to them. Shame on PML-N.
Why you did not object there and then? What were your motives at that time? Instead of going to CJP for help, you could talk to opposition and get your selected candidate elected unopposed? Shame Mr SS.
