A pair of lovebirds is officially the ‘most married couple’ in the world – after tying the knot a staggering 106 times. Americans David and Lauren Blair, who met in 1982, notched up the huge tally after promising each other they would never let go of that moment of bliss the first time they became husband and wife. The lovers, from Hendersonville in Tennessee, have since married in locations across the globe from London to New York, Scotland, Las Vegas, Elvis’ birthplace and even on a professional Romeo and Juliet theatre set. But the incredible record is made all the more amazing by the fact that Lauren said no the first time David proposed – only to change her mind three months later when she caught the bouquet at her cousin’s wedding. They first wed in 1984 and have since renewed their vows on days such as Valentine’s Day, a minute either side of New Year, Christmas Day, February 29 or can even count every day of the month as their anniversary. They broke the world record for the ‘most married couple’ at Serendipity 3 Restaurant in New York City on Valentine’s Day 2001 with wedding number 59 – but decided to keep going. Their latest ceremony is scheduled for August 4 2013 and the happy couple can’t wait to say their ‘I dos’ again as they celebrate their 30th year of married life.
Lauren, 62, said: ‘We met at Universal Studios in Hollywood in September 1982. David said it was love at first sight and after three months of dating proposed to me. ‘I thought it was a bit soon but three months later I caught the bouquet at my cousin’s wedding and it was a sign – the next day I gave him a card that said “If you still want to marry me, please ask me again”.’ ‘So he got down on one knee and proposed again and this time I said yes.
‘We got married in Los Angeles on May 6, 1984 and then had a church wedding the next day in Chicago, which is where I am originally from, with both families in attendance. ‘Then on May 12, while on our honeymoon, we renewed our vows again. When we got home we looked into whether there was a Guinness Record for this feat and found that there was.’ She added: ‘It started because we were both in long-term relationships in the past that didn’t work out. We knew we were meant for each other and wanted to continually share that vow experience.
‘Our original goal was 100, so now that we’ve passed that mark we are looking for new goals to reach. David is turning 60 on our upcoming wedding day, August 4, so we mark special occasions like that. ‘We’ve already been married on every numbered day of the month so every day is our anniversary, even on leap year. We’ve been married on 01/01/01, 02/02/02, 03/03/03 and so on finishing that goal on 12/12/12. ‘We’re hopelessly in love – each one of our ceremonies has been emotional and very special to us. ‘We are very serious about our vows and people say it is obvious by just looking at us. ‘I love to look into David’s eyes as he is repeating his vows. I know that this man will love me until the day I die – of course, David will tell you that he does it for the honeymoons. ‘But we are just too much in love and we love to profess it in front of as many people as possible.’
