The electricity shortfall on Thursday reached 3,200 megawatts, increasing load shedding across the country.

According to the Ministry of Water and Power‚ the electricity demand stood at about 17,000 MW against generation of about 13,800 MW.

Independent power plants (IPPs) were generating 6,335 MW, hydel power sources 5,500 MW and thermal plants were producing 1,900 MW of electricity.

Rural areas were facing load shedding for over 11 hours while urban areas were suffering up to eight hours of power cuts.

Long and unannounced phases of load shedding had made the lives of people miserable as prolonged outages resulted in shortage of drinking water supply in several areas.

In Faisalabad, hundreds of labourers from industrial units protested against unannounced power load shedding.
