Reportedly, the life of Tauqir Sadiq, the man behind the Rs82 billion scam, is in grave danger. While we welcome him back home to stand trial in the court and to disgorge the swindled amount of the poor Pakistanis, it is government’s responsibility to protect him. Obviously, Tauqir was not alone in ripping off the huge amount; there were powerful individuals and corrupt syndicates that used him as their front man. They also helped him flee the country despite all the restrictions imposed on him. Tauqir’s life is as important as Pervez Musharraf’s is. Therefore, I suggest lodging him in the same sub-jail where Musharraf resides in style at Chak Shahzad. In the palatial farmhouse, Tauqir could be accommodated in one of the many outhouses of the main building. The security details on Musharraf could also protect Tauqir, conserving manpower. People are more interested in recovering money from Tauqir and unearthing his cohorts in crime than they are in Musharraf’s fate. Best it would be if Tauqir returned his share of the loot and turned himself an approver.
