32,000 army men to perform election duty in Punjab

At least 300,000 security personnel including 32,000 army men will be deployed in Punjab for general elections.

The decision was taken at a meeting presided over by Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani at Corps Headquarters in Lahore.

Briefing the newsmen after the meeting, DG ISPR Major General Asim Saleem Bajwa said the army wanted peaceful elections and for that purpose 32,000 army personnel would perform election duty in Punjab. All the personnel had already reached their destinations, he added.

The DG ISPR further said army officials had also held meetings with stakeholders in Sindh and Balochistan. No one should have any doubt about holding of the elections, he maintained.

Sources added that the army chief asked all the security stakeholders to focus on ensuring timely elections. He said their aim would be to hold peaceful elections throughout the country and for this all the stakeholders should give priority to mutual coordination.
