Margala Hills is home to about 460 species of birds, said environment expert Safan Shahab Ahmed on Saturday.
Talking to a private news channel, Ahmed said birds play an important role in the beauty of a place. He said species of birds like chief pheasant, monal, and alexandrine parakeet are facing threat of extinction in Pakistan. He said in order to preserve these species hunters should be barred from killing these rare birds. He stressed planting more fruit-bearing trees for the purpose was essential. He also said that there was need to promulgate laws that could protect birds, adding that more parks should be set up to provide home to pheasant and monal.
Ahmed said that there should be no felling of trees to protect nests. He said that there should be complete ban on the shepherds who visit these parks.
Answering to a question, he said that one fourth of the birds come from other regions of the world including Siberia. He said that these birds like to stay near dams in Pakistan and eat those plants in the sea that have germs. These germs are very harmful to human health. He said this way these birds play vital role for human beings.
Talking about role of birds in promoting tourism, he said tourism is dealt on a professional way in countries like Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia. He said birds could play a key role in promoting tourism in Pakistan, adding that civil society should pay attention to the birds and environment as well.
