Prime Minister Mir Hazar Khan Khoso deferred the meeting of the Council of Common Interest (CCI) which was scheduled for Friday (today) at the PM’s Secretariat, after Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Justice (r) Tariq Pervez Khan raised a procedural objection.

In a subsequent informal meeting, Minister for Water and Power Dr Musadiq Malik briefed the attendees on the current energy situation and measures being taken by the government to improve it in the limited available time.

The minister said the power situation in the country was adversely impacted because of inefficiencies, element of corruption, and mismanagement that encompassed the entire energy chain.

Malik said hydro power generation in the country peak to around 6,000MW for only a few days and fluctuates between 800MW to 6,000MW during the year.

“The hydro generation is further restrained by the fact that it is not governed by the storage capacity as perceived generally but by the flow which is regulated by IRSA on the indent of the provinces,” he said, adding that it was a myth that the total generation capacity was over 20,000MW. “The assumption is bogus” he said.
