Underage driving in most parts of the provincial capital has become a serious threat to the life and property of people as laws could not be implemented in letter and spirit by the traffic police. The dangerous driving trend on busy roads causes a number of injuries in accidents daily, an official of Rescue 1122 stated while talking to APP on Monday.

Over 10,000 underage boys are driving vehicles like cars, motorbikes and motorcycle or auto- rickshaws without proper training and driving licences.

In most areas of the city, juveniles drive vehicles without fear of government authorities. The areas where illegal juveniles driving motorcycle-rickshaws is on the rise include Lorry Adda, Badami Bagh, Shadbagh, GT Road, Garhi Shahu, Railway Station, Mughalpura and Green Town.

Similarly, areas where doing “wheelie” on motorbikes and rash car driving is common include Jail Road, Canal Road, GT Road and Moulana Shoukat Ali Road.

Juvenile drivers do not care for line and lane rules, indicators, even headlights in some cases and violate one way traffic, the official added. Rescue 1122 has to deal with more than 25 traffic incidents daily.

A city district government official said that an increasingly large number of motorcycle-rickshaw drivers were utilizing their vehicles for carrying passengers. On the other hand, they use political support to pressurize the district administration and police, the official added.

When contacted, Chief Traffic Officer Capt (Retd) Suhail Chaudhry termed the juvenile driving trend a serious issue and stressed the need to engage civil society to eliminate it.

He said traffic police was facing a shortfall of 800 wardens and it was difficult to deploy a sufficient number of wardens to nab underage drivers. During special drives, the CTO added, traffic police took stern action against juvenile drivers and also imposed heavy fines on 1,728 persons besides impounding vehicles. The CTO vowed to continue a crackdown on underage driving.

He urged the public to abide by the traffic laws and restrain their children from illegal use of vehicles for their safety.

  1. In this case it is essential to provide training and programs that encourage young people to drive safely and respect. The laws were created to provide security for all people and therefore must comply.

  2. Another reason is the increase in number of piandoo (villager) drivers. Most of them drive a corolla and are one of the worst drivers on the road with no brain at all.
and another reason are the motorcyclists who have absolutely no road sense and there is no difference between a motorcyclist and an animal. Even a dog looks before crossing the road.
