Senate Standing Committee on Human Rights Chairman Afrasiab Khattak has said the constitution ensured equal rights to people of different religions.
Talking to the journalists during his visit to Joseph Colony, Badami Bagh, on Friday, he said that all people were equal before the law and Islam gave a message of peace, tolerance and patience. He said he condemned such incidents that disrupted peace in the society. He said the committee would make recommendations and ensure that such incidents do not take place in the future. Severe punishment will be awarded to the accused, he added. He also paid tribute to the administration which tried its best to maintain peace and did not let the situation worsen.
Senators Farhatullah Babar and Mushahid Ullah Khan condemned the incident and said that steps should be taken for promotion of interfaith harmony. Religious scholars can play an effective role in this regard, they added. Senator Farhat Abbas, Badshahi Mosque Khateeb Maulana Abdul Khabeer Azad, Mufti Bilal Naqshbandi, Senator Kamran Michael and others were also present.
