An election tribunal of the Lahore High Court (LHC) disqualified former PML-N MPA and Parliamentary Secretary for Religious Affairs Iftikhar Ahmad Khan on Tuesday.

The tribunal comprising LHC Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial announced the verdict while allowing an election petition filed by Iqbal Ahmad Khan. The tribunal had reserved the verdict in November last after hearing arguments of both parties.

The petitioner said that Iftikhar was elected an MPA in the 2008 general elections from PP-81, Jhang. He alleged the respondent used unfair means to obtain his BA degree from Azad Jammu and Kashmir University.

The petitioner contended that Iftikhar was not eligible to hold the seat as he did not fulfill the criteria set in Articles 62 and 63 of the constitution. He pleaded to the tribunal to disqualify the respondent on the basis of having a degree received through impersonation.
