Man gets bail in ephedrine smuggling case

The Court of Control of Narcotic Substances on Wednesday, granted bail to Abdul Khaliq, an alleged smuggler involved in the ephedrine quota case, who was arrested in November 2012.

Arshad Mehmood Tabassum, the judge of the court, announced the judgement which was reserved on Tuesday. The judge directed Abdul Khaliq alias Dil Agha to furnish two surety bonds each worth Rs 500,000.

In his petition, Khaliq pleaded innocent and said he was arrested on the basis of rivalry. He also pleaded that there was no evidence available with the Anti-narcotics Force (ANF) against him.

He also informed the court that he was a dry-fruit dealer and was not aware of the alleged smuggling of ephedrine.
To which, ANF Prosecutor Zahid Ghumman informed the court that Abdul Khaliq had allegedly smuggled 9,000 kilogrammes of ephedrine from Balochistan to Iran.

Earlier, the court also gave a final chance to the investigating officer to complete all formalities with reference to the challan and submit it until February 22.
