We have to do something on our own

The loss of precious human lives has become a routine phenomenon in Pakistan. Whether it is targeted killings, or deaths that occur because of accidents that could have been avoided, the fact is that we are witnessing a gory drama of death and destruction on a daily basis. The details of these horrendous episodes are repeated on the media for all to see, but there seems to be no real solution to prevent all this.
At the highest level, it indicates dismal governance, which includes not only political office bearers, but security and law enforcing agencies as well. The lack of accountability, as well as corrupt practices at all levels and a generally apathetic attitude towards life in general are contributing factors. At the grass roots level, citizens can also be blamed for their lack of vigilance and careless, even heartless attitude towards their surroundings and fellow citizens.
We will all have to take responsibility of our communities and speak up against what we perceive to be wrong. Most of us prefer to bury our heads in the sand, only until, God forbid, we are directly affected by any calamity. We must become responsible citizens, and teach our young generation through example and inspire them to be compassionate and proactive, rather than apathetic and careless. Whether it is violence in the name of religion, or destruction through accidents that are the result of ignoring basic civic laws, it is all indicative of a decadent society.
Very serious soul searching and intelligent planning will be required to pull us out of this downward social spiral. Those amongst us who are educated will have to take the lead in this, and initiative public discourse on all matters pertaining to responsible citizenship.
