Traffic accidents have seen an increase in the provincial metropolis over the last year, Pakistan Today has learnt.
According to a report, more than 2,500 accidetna have been reported in Punjab, with 1,000 of these having occurred in Lahore only.
Many people have lost their lives because of these accidents while many were rendered disabled.
“The main reason why accidents take place is that most of the signals are dysfunctional. People are normally in a rush because they get stuck in traffic jams too often,” a citizen said, adding that the officials were being given huge salaries but that was pointless because the traffic police could not function without a proper traffic system and there was none in the province.
“There is no need to make the roads wide or to introduce metro buses when the traffic system does not function,” a citizen named Nazamul Din told Pakistan Today, adding that the traffic in certain areas such as Mozang, Shadman, Railways Station, Bhatti Chowk and many other places was so bad there an entire day was needed to get out of it and one traffic warden could not handle these areas. “However, even the signals in these areas are dysfunctional which means that the wardens deployed there are useless,” he added.
On Sunday only, a 10-year-old child and his mother were run over by a car. Another boy was killed by an over-speeding tractor trolley.
Another man lost his life in a traffic accident in Sherakot few days back. Another man named Hakam, riding bicycle was hit by a Mazda van in Khana. Another man named Iqbal along with his wife got badly injured when their motorbike slipped on the Jail Road.
“We have been able to get around 80 percent of the traffic under control but people need to abide by the speed limit and the laws,” a traffic official said, adding that CCTV cameras also need to be installed so that over-speeding vehicles could be controlled.
He said the people were in a rush normally and should learn to leave their houses on time so that they could reach their destination on time without over-speeding.
