The Railway Police has caught many thieves who were stealing goods from railway stations, Pakistan Railways Senior Superintendent Police Dr Shehzad Ahmad said on Sunday.

He said the PR police had written letters to the administration several times to store extra or damaged coaches at the same place in Lahore yard to save them from theft, but the department had not responded.

“I cannot say why there is delay,” he said, adding that 600 railway stations were situated in the division but most of them were nonfunctional due to the closure of trains which was also a reason of theft.

“The police are trying its best to protect the railway property,” he said, adding that some constables could also be involved in such activities and a stern action had been taken against them.

He said salaries of railways police were lower than district police which could also be the reason of embezzlement, however, this could not justify their conduct.

Responding to a question about increasing activities of pickpockets at Lahore Railway Station, he said the police was trying its best to curtail such activities with the given resources.
