Hearing the rental power project (RPPs) implementation case on Wednesday, a three-member Supreme Court bench sought a certified copy of the letter written by NAB Chairman Admiral (r) Fasih Bokhari to President Asif Ali Zardari regarding pressure in the case by the apex court. In the letter, the NAB chairman had accused the judiciary of pressurising NAB officials and interfering in their duty. The three-member bench of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Gulzar Ahmed and Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed on Wednesday summoned the record of the recipients of the letter to evaluate its legality and motives. The bench directed the NAB chairman to produce a copy of his letter by today (Thursday). In his remarks, the CJ said even a man in uniform was not allowed to interfere in the court’s proceedings, so how could the court allow the NAB chairman to do the same. The CJ said, “The court wants to know the reasons for which the NAB chairman wrote the letter to President Zardari.” He observed that the court wanted to determine whether the letter written was an effort to pressurise the court or to spread hatred against the judiciary. “We are very serious about this letter. We will not allow any one to malign the judiciary,” the CJ said. He said no one would be allowed to interfere in the court’s proceedings, adding that the court would explore the aims and motives behind writing the letter. The chief justice also said the court would examine whether the NAB chairman was authorised under law to write such a letter. Earlier at the onset of proceedings on Wednesday, NAB prosecutor KK Agha appeared before the bench and sought apology over NAB chairman’s absence.
