AN extravaganza

Let us not hold elections which according to the constitution are due to be held in May or June this year. It is a sheer waste of billions of rupees and wasted use of already diminishing resources of the country. Let the present government continue for indefinite period of time since it is fighting a ‘war on terror’ which by all stretch of imagination is bigger than WWII. Million of rupees are being dished out to parliamentarians and the rate is increasing on an hourly basis. Billions are going to go in elections in the shape of tenting, transport, ballot papers, posters, banners, pamphlets and eatables. The entire country will stop working for 6-7 days. Even the little bit that we are working now will also cease.
Fuel prices are going to go sky rocketing level. All shortages will multiply geometrically. Election commission personnel cost us lot of money. Army and Rangers’ mobilisation will consume tons of fuel. I cannot write down all the details of other expenditures. We cannot afford this extravaganza. The country is already on the brink of bankruptcy; IMF and other loaning agencies have already regretted. Is the luxury of elections affordable under these circumstances? And by the way, will elections change things? Yes, we will have a few new faces here and there. But they say one fool is as good as another; so why have new faces? New provinces are made and I am sure with the abilities of Gilanis coming back, the administration and governance will go 100 percent. With the talent of Canadian brain available to us 24/7, do we need anything else?
