A popular argument always given in support of a political government is that all decisions are always taken through consensus and involve the public representatives. Sitting today by the TV, I was wondering that when the situation in Quetta has reached a sad level of complete breakdown and Tahirul Qadri is threatening the peace and security of the federal capital, where are the so-called decision makers? Which parliament or committee or cabinet is deliberating over these issues? Are we satisfied leaving these issues to Khurshid Shah or Malik Riaz?
But then, when I look into the past I fail to remember which parliament or cabinet approved the decision to detonate the nuclear bomb in 1998, or who approved the freezing of the foreign currency accounts or which assembly authorised the then prime minister to rush to Washington begging for US intervention to cool down the Kargil situation. To me, all decisions in any political government are taken at best by a kitchen cabinet. If so, why bluff the innocent people by attractive sloganeering of democracy and people’s government.
