Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi Chief Muhammad Hussain Mahenti on Monday expressed his deep concern over the ongoing process of voters’ verification in the absence of army and FC personnel through a letter sent to the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Fakruddin G Ibrahim.
In the letter, JI Karachi chief adopted a view point that the verification process of electoral rolls had once again been hijacked by the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM).
Mahenti demanded of the CEC to carry out voters’ verification in the presence of army and to stop the intervention of MQM workers in the said process.
“Violation of the verdict of Supreme Court is being continued by MQM workers pretending to be staffers of the Election Commission,” Mahenti said.
He further said that the upcoming general elections would prove ineffective if political intervention was not stopped during the process of voters’ list verification.
Furthermore, Mahenti said the voters’ list verification was being continued under the supervision of MQM workers, adding a day before the commencement of the process of voters’ verification, terrorists had targeted Mehmood Ahmed Barkati in his herbal clinic, father of Mujahid Ahmed Barkati who was the JI District Central Incharge Election Cell.
“The target killing of Mehmood Barkati was a clear message from the terrorists that anyone who wanted to revise the voters’ verification, should deserve to death,” Mahenti added.
The JI Karachi chief demanded of the CEC to provide permission letter and photo card to the staffers of Election Commission, while personnel of army or FC should accompany the staff of the commission.
“None of the MQM party workers should be accompanying the Election Commission staffers, while party offices should not used during the verification process,” Mahenti demanded.
He further demanded that advertisement of the process of voters’ verification should be shown on electronic and print media, while adding that details of the said process should be updated on the website on daily basis.
