Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) Deputy Convener o Dr Farooq Sattar said that the party Chief Altaf Hussain cannot appear in the court owing to the unavoidable circumstances.
Talking to media outside the Supreme Court (SC), he said that the party had filled a petition to exempt Altaf Hussain from court appearances. He said that MQM respected the judiciary and the constitution, adding that Altaf Hussain would be represented in the court by party elders and lawyers. He hoped that all cases against Altaf would be resolved amicably. Meanwhile, MQM’s Chief Lawyer Faroogh Naseem said that leaders of the country’s political parties were beset with myriads of threats for the last five years and the court should exempt Altaf Hussain from an appearance before the court.
The Supreme Court on December 14 issued a show-cause notice to MAltaf Hussain for using contemptuous and derogatory language against the judiciary and directed him to appear before the court to explain his position on January 7. A three-member SC bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry issued the notice under Article 204 read with Section 3 of Contempt of Court Ordinance 2003, while hearing the Karachi law and order case. It directed the MQM chief to appear before the court and explain why contempt proceeding should not be initiated against him for criticising the judiciary. Following Supreme Court’s judgment on delimitation of constituencies in Karachi, Altaf criticised SC judges during a telephonic address to a party rally on November 30. Altaf termed the court’s activism as unconstitutional and undemocratic.
