Newly developed ‘Bebionic’ hand, prosthetic limbs come to the aid of amputees

National Seminar on Amputee Rehabilitation was held at the Armed Forces Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine (AFIRM) Rawalpindi today. Surgeon General, Lieutenant General Azhar Rasheed was the chief guest on the occasion.
Presenters delivered lectures on different topics related to amputee rehabilitation.
The chief guest along with the participants from AFIRM, PIPOS, Isra Institute of Rehabilitation Sciences (IIRS), ZUIS Pharmaland, Fauji Foundation Hospital (Artificial Limbs Centre) and Dow University of Health Sciences Karachi visited different stalls displaying accessories related to upper and lower limb amputees. AFIRM had also presented the latest “Bebionic” hand which had the capacity to simulate various types of grips used by amputees.
AFIRM also showcased the sports prosthetics used by the lower limb amputees for running. A workshop on ice cast anatomy was also arranged by AFIRM in this connection.
It is important to mention here that this is the only tertiary care rehab centre in Pakistan which had all the disciplines related to physical medicines and rehabilitation under one roof. Patients belonging from all over the country were being provided with the latest prostheses.
Furthermore, AFIRM was also equipped with ALAC (Artificial Limb & Appliances Centre) which had the capability of fabricating prostheses & orthoses.
The seminar was attended by various participants from different institutes and Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) which were involved in amputee rehabilitation efforts spanning across Pakistan.
The participants present on the occasion showed a lot of interest in the seminar and the different stalls set up on the occasion.
Later, Lt General Azhar presented souvenirs to the guest speakers.
