While attending the fourth convocation of University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences at Lahore on 17-12-2012, it was a very pleasant surprise to learn about the tremendous progress of UVAS after a decade of its inception in 2002. Since the scribe was associated with the genesis of this university, it would be of interest to recall the incidence which spawned the university. It was reported in the press that during the period of attaching the Punjab Veterinary College with University of Agriculture Faisalabad, 14 PhD teachers out of 29 had left the college.
The above disclosure triggered the case of autonomy for the college and later blossoming in the creation of a full-fledged university. Today the university has produced 30 PhD degree holders as also 1,072 scholars in the various fields during the period of past two years or so under the watch of present Vice Chancellor which is a remarkable feat placing the UVAS at number 12 out of 82 national universities in a relatively short period. What is required now is to ensure continuity in the progress over the coming years so that the same rate of progress in teaching and research programmes could be maintained.
