The KBD conundrum

The recent development in the most disputed but pivotal Kalabagh dam demand a mature approach and consensus from all the political parties. They should think above provincialism for greater national interest. It is a reality that our last big dam was Tarbela built almost four decades ago. The energy crisis caused by the deficiency of electricity and gas can aptly be overcome by building KBD. KBD is indispensable for the economy of Pakistan as, according to an estimate, it has the capacity of producing more than 20,000MW power. However, the affectees can be compensated by accommodating them in the settled areas. Some sacrifices will have to be rendered on the altar of greater national interest. The leaders should not exploit this issue for political point scoring because if Pakistan is self-sufficient in fulfilling its requirements, eventually it will benefit us .We should divert our endeavours from hostilities to cooperation. All the stakeholders – the govt, opposition, common masses and media should extend their full support in realising this dream into reality.

  1. Without the right bank canal at KBD, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will not get any water from any dam on the Indus, be it Tarbela, Bhasha, Akhori, Skardu or Kutzara dam.
Sindh needs KBD more than Punjab which has adequate ground water. Sindh will get all the benefits of power and water without losing even one acre of land or displacement of even one person.
