French Open runner-up Sara Errani has landed a WTA awards double, including the most improved player gong. The Italian finished the season ranked sixth in the world – up from 45th at the end of 2011 – after a year which saw her claim four singles titles. All four came on her favourite clay surface but results on hardcourts also improved significantly, most notably a run to the semi-finals of the US Open. Errani was also superb on the doubles court, linking up with compatriot Roberta Vinci to win the French and US Open crowns. The pair’s efforts saw them named WTA doubles team of the year. Errani told the official WTA website: “I’m very happy to have been voted most improved player, and doubles team of the year too.
