PM directs mobile companies to continue issuing SIM cards

Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf has directed the mobile companies to continue issuing SIM cards from their self-owned and operated business centers as well as franchise centers after due verification from National Database and Registration Authority.
However‚ the sale of SIMs from retail network would remain suspended until the biometric devices are deployed at each centre.
He took the decision in a meeting with a delegation of Chief Executive Officers of private cellular operators in Islamabad on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf has said that government has taken a decision to expedite the auction of 3-G mobile license in the country keeping in view the benefits it would bring for the people in the shape of providing easy access to employment opportunities, education, health, agriculture and other social needs.
The Prime Minister was talking to Chairman/Chief Executive Officer VimpleCom the holding company of Mobilink, Mr. Jo Lunder who called on him here Thursday.
The Prime Minister said that government is committed to pursue policies to facilitate the investors in all sectors particularly the telecom to attract modern technology for the benefit of the people of Pakistan. He reiterated the resolve of the government to provide enabling environment in this regard.
The Prime Minister while acknowledging the prospects in the telecom sector of Pakistan stated that it has a lot of room for further growth.
The CEO VimpleCom informed the Prime Minister that the company plan a progressive expansion and modernization progremme which is already in implementation stage. The company has so far invested four billion dollars in the Pakistan and has plan to investment another one billion dollars in the near future for the expansion of Mobilink national wide network.
The CEO said that the nature of telecom sector investment is long term and dynamic due to rapid change in technologies. He said that the skill and competence shown by the human resource available in Pakistan has been impressing for the multinational telecom companies.
